A letter from Diane, about the little bracelet she first saw at the hairdresser's
A letter from a reader

At 63, I've worn the same two bracelets for thirty years. This is the first to earn a place beside them.

Six things a little bird bracelet gets right that thirty years of jewellery counters got wrong, written down by a customer, not a jeweller.

I can count my everyday jewellery on one hand. My wedding ring, my watch, and two bracelets I've owned for thirty years: a thin silver bangle from my mother and a gold chain Gilles gave me for our tenth anniversary. Nothing new has earned a place in that little rotation for decades, and plenty has tried.

Then, three weeks ago, I sat at the hairdresser's on Richmond Road with my foils in, and I couldn't stop looking at the wrist of the woman in the next chair. Three tiny silver birds, side by side on a branch, on a soft brown cord. Every time she turned a page of her magazine, there they were.

I was sure they'd been in her family for years. She told me she'd ordered it online, and that she'd bought two more since for her daughters.

Too much, or nothing

If you've shopped for a bracelet lately, you'll know it comes in two piles.

The first pile is made for somebody forty years younger. Glitter, dangling charms, words spelled out in rhinestones. The sort of thing that looks a little silly on a 63-year-old wrist, and you know it the moment you see it in the mirror.

The second pile is so plain and apologetic it may as well not be there at all. A thin chain nobody notices, including you.

Too much, or nothing. I'd quietly accepted that those were the choices at my age. They aren't.

The bracelet is called the Vintage Bird, from Sylvie & Odette, a small shop that dresses women our age. I ordered it fully expecting it to look cheap when it arrived. It didn't. It has been on my wrist, next to my mother's bangle, every day since. Here are the six reasons why.

The day it came. I had it on before I'd read the rest of the mail.

1.Three little birds: detail without noise

In the middle sits a small silver-toned piece: three little birds side by side on one branch. It's the kind of detail nobody sees across a room and everybody sees across a table. People lean in, and then they ask. It reads like a piece with a story behind it, a gift or something passed down, rather than something off a rack of fifty identical bangles. That's exactly what I assumed at the hairdresser's, and I was wrong.

"Someone always asks where it’s from. It’s the kind of bracelet that has a little story behind it, so it gets a conversation going right away."

Marlene B., Winnipeg

2.Soft cord, not clattering metal

The band is two slim rounds of smooth brown cord that lie flat against the wrist. It doesn't rattle on the table when I set down my cup. It doesn't catch on a sweater sleeve when I pull my cardigan on. It doesn't clink against my watch. It simply sits there, quietly, all day, and by the second morning I'd stopped noticing it was on at all. At our age, that's the highest compliment jewellery can be paid.

"Really quiet and light on the wrist. Doesn’t catch on sleeves, and after an hour you don’t even feel it anymore."

Jan S., Calgary

3.It sits happily beside the things I already wear

This is the part that won it a place in my rotation. Brown cord and a soft silver tone is about the most forgiving combination there is. It looks right on its own, right next to my watch, and right beside my mother's silver bangle and Gilles's gold chain, which is more than I can say for anything else I've tried in thirty years. And it goes with every sweater, every coat and every colour in my closet from now until spring.

"I wear it next to my watch and sometimes with a few other bracelets, and it always fits right in. Not too flashy, works with any outfit."

4.A proper clasp, and it fits the wrist you actually have

This one surprised me. It does up with a proper little lobster clasp on a short chain, so it's on in a second, by myself, no second pair of hands. And because the chain gives a bit of length to play with, it sits exactly where I want it: snug, or a little loose so it slides down toward my hand. Small wrist or not, it fits. Mine has never once felt too tight or too big.

"The clasp is easy to do up myself, even one-handed. And thanks to the adjustable bit it fits a slim wrist as well as a thicker one."

Silvija T. P.

5.It's made to stay on

I've had my share of cheap bracelets that fell apart, so I looked at this one closely before I trusted it. The three birds are one solid piece, all on the same branch, so there's no little charm dangling off a ring waiting to drop somewhere between the car and the grocery store. Each side of the cord is finished with a tidy coiled wrap and a small metal cap, so there are no loose ends to fray. There's nothing hanging off it to snag. After three weeks of wearing it every day, through dishes, gardening gloves and pulling coats on and off, it looks just the way it did when it came. And if it ever doesn't, the shop takes it back within thirty days.

"I wear it almost every day and it still looks good. No discoloration, the leather stays neat. Quality that’s worth the money."

Tonia S., Peterborough

6.Three birds on a branch makes a present with a story

I went back and ordered a second one within the week, for my sister Claudette's birthday, and I'll tell you why. When I gave it to her, I told her the three birds were her, me and our little sister Louise, the three of us on the same branch for sixty-odd years. She didn't say anything for a moment. She's worn it every day since. Everyone who sees three birds on a branch finds their own three in it: sisters, daughters, grandchildren. It arrives looking like a considered gift, not a plastic pouch of costume jewellery, and the woman at the hairdresser's had already bought one for each of her girls. That tells you everything about the sort of thing this is.

The Vintage Bird vs. the bracelets you've been buying

You can find a bracelet for under forty dollars almost anywhere. I know, because a drawer upstairs is full of them. Here's the difference, laid out plainly.

Most bracelets under $40
  • Glittery pieces made for somebody half your age, or so plain nobody notices
  • Heavy bangles that rattle and catch on knitwear
  • Little charms on rings that open and get lost
  • One size that fits nobody properly
  • In the drawer within a month
The Vintage Bird
  • Three little birds on a branch that people lean in to look at
  • Soft double cord that sits flat and silent
  • One solid piece, neatly finished, nothing dangling
  • A proper clasp and a little chain, so it fits the wrist you have
  • The one that stays on

About the price

It's $39.95 CAD.Was $89.95 CAD

I'll be straightforward, because the price is what made me suspicious. Under forty dollars, and I was sure it would turn up looking like a prize from the fall fair. It didn't. The birds have weight and detail to them, the cord is smooth and even, and the clasp closes with a proper click.

It's in the shop's autumn sale right now, down from $89.95. I've paid more than that for bracelets that were in the donation bag by Christmas. This one hasn't been off my wrist in three weeks, and if it ever lets you down, the shop takes it back within thirty days, with free shipping across Canada.

And because I don't trust perfect scores, I read the reviews before I ordered. There are over three hundred of them, sitting at 4.2 out of 5, which sounded like real women rather than robots, and the same things came up again and again: the little birds, how quiet it is, how easily it does up.

One more thing the shop asked me to pass on: the autumn sale ends tonight at midnight. After that the Vintage Bird goes back to $89.95, and they've told me it won't come down again before Christmas. Their words, not mine. If I were you, I wouldn't leave it until the morning.

What I'd tell you if we were friends

If you were sitting next to me at the hairdresser's, foils in, I wouldn't try to sell you a bracelet. I'd ask you what's on your wrist right now, and how long it's been there.

I think a lot of us stopped buying jewellery for ourselves somewhere along the way. Not because we stopped liking it, but because everything in the shops was either for our granddaughters or for nobody at all. We kept our two or three old pieces and called it done.

I did that for thirty years. Then a stranger turned a page of her magazine. If you've been waiting for one small piece that's neither too much nor nothing, this is it.
